June 11th:National Call the Doctor Day

It is National Call Your Doctor Day! During class today we are exploring the topic of calling the doctor. It can be a scary thing, but is an important life skill. One element of calling the doctor is knowing WHEN to call the doctor. Another element of calling the doctor is knowing WHAT information will be needed to schedule an appointment.

Some relevant life skills to practice today:

  • Memorizing Personal Information

  • Discussing medical emergencies vs. non-emergencies

  • When to call the doctor (annual exams, sick days, if medications stop working, etc.)

If memorizing personal information is out of the question, can your learner practice reading it? Providing your learner with a script/information before the doctor is called that can increase independence. Diverse learners should always have a way to provide their personal information whether it is by presenting a state ID or a sheet of paper with identifying information.
